Unlocked Bootloader Detection
Definition
An unlocked bootloader means the device's startup protection has been removed, allowing the operating system to be modified. When the bootloader is unlocked, apps and system files can be altered, replaced, or flashed with custom software. This weakens the security of the device because it no longer verifies if the system running is trusted or original.
Security Implications
An unlocked bootloader creates several risks:
- Malicious system modifications can be installed without the user's knowledge.
- Sensitive data may be exposed, as attackers can bypass core system protections.
- Apps cannot trust the device, because integrity checks may fail.
- Financial and sensitive apps may block access due to the high security risk.
- Attackers can inject or replace system components, enabling keylogging, data theft, or App tampering.
Overall, an unlocked bootloader makes the device unreliable for secure operations.
How To Disable Unlocked Bootloader?
To fix the issue, you need to relock the bootloader or restore the device to a secure state.
Step 1: Check Bootloader Status
Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Tap Build Number 7 times to enable Developer Options. Go to Settings -> System -> Developer Options. Look for OEM Unlocking status. If it appears enabled, the bootloader may be unlocked.
Step 2: Turn Off OEM Unlocking
- In Developer Options, find OEM Unlocking.
- If it's ON, turn it OFF.
- This prevents the bootloader from being unlocked again.
Step 3: Ensure Using a Non-Rooted Device
- Verify that your device is not rooted
- If your device is rooted, unroot it or switch to a clean, non-rooted device to ensure a secure environment
Step 4: Relock the Bootloader (Most Reliable Fix)
- Relock the bootloader after flashing the official stock Firmware
- Your device will reboot with a locked bootloader.
Step 5: Factory Reset
- Some devices require a full reset after relocking.
- Go to Settings -> System -> Reset Options -> Erase all data.
Step 6: Avoid Custom ROMs
If you installed a custom ROM earlier:
- Reinstall the official stock firmware from the device manufacturer.
- This ensures the system is verified and trusted.
